Camping and skin care

In the Glow of the Campfire. Oh wait, that’s your skin.

I love to go camping.  There is just something about roughing it for a few days that really appeals to me.  I love assembling our tent, setting out our cooler and camp chairs, starting a fire, and just being outside.

Everything is simplified; I wear comfy clothes, no makeup, and my hair is in a ponytail or braids the whole time.  There are no distractions, like a phone or television, to get in the way of pure family time.  Often, where we go camping, we don’t even have cell service, so I use my phone just to take pictures.

Camping provides a little escape from the city’s noise and a glimpse into outer space.  We live in the city with a lot of light pollution so when we look up in the sky, we see darkness.   You don’t realize how many stars are out there; it really is amazing.

We get to reconnect with nature and our imaginations.  My son loves to tell stories by the campfire, and he makes sure we all get a turn.  I discovered that my imagination is weak and out of shape.  I had to really dig down deep to think of stories to tell.  My son, on the other hand, does not understand why it is so hard to come up with stories.  He says he just makes his up as he goes along and then he shrugs his shoulders like it’s the easiest thing.  He has a great imagination and I don’t ever want him to lose it.

Who Doesn’t Love Camping?

Personally, I love camping and believe there is brilliance in roughing it.  It clears my head, I relax, and I am more in tune with nature.  If I’m lucky I’ll get a visit from the local wildlife.

I do have one small issue though.   My skin care routine has become a habit and I don’t like to deviate from it.

Camping causes a deviation.

I’ve always had oily skin.  It has taken me a long time with a lot of trial and error to finally achieve balance.  It’s, finally now, neither oily nor dry.  It’s just right and I want to keep it that way.

I could go without washing my face, but my skin doesn’t like it when I do that.  It revolts with angry little pimples.

The problem is, we don’t have any running water so I can’t wash my face.  We bring drinking water with us and sometimes I will use that, but it isn’t the most convenient method.  Plus, I don’t want to use all our drinking water on my face.

Sometimes we find a creak or stream near our camp site.  I”ll splash my face with fresh, cold water and it feels amazing.

If we don’t happen to find a babbling brook, then I have to find other ways to clean my face without water.

Ways to Clean Your Face When Camping:

There are two different ways that work for me:

  • Facial cleansing wipes:

These are oh so convenient.  They come in an unbreakable, resealable pouch. Just pop the top, swipe your face and done.

One of the biggest issues with using the cleansing wipes is that they are not all that environmentally friendly; they don’t biodegrade.

I will toss my used wipes into our campfire instead of the garbage.

  • Micellar water with cotton pads or reusable cloths:

This option requires 2 products instead of one but still fairly easy to use.  Just saturate a cotton pad with your micellar water of choice, swipe your face and done.

The cotton pads are natural fibers and will biodegrade, so this is an eco-friendlier option.  These can also be burned in your campfire.

Another eco-friendly option is reusable makeup remover cloths.

Cleansing Wipes:

The easiest and most convenient way is to use facial cleansing wipes.

Micellar Water:

Cleansing with micellar water isn’t as easy or convenient as wipes but it’s pretty close.

Reusable Cloths:

Lastly

I need to wash my face every day and using water is my first and best option.  Sometimes, water just isn’t available.  The cleansing wipes and micellar water allow me to “wash” my face while we are sitting around the campfire telling stories or laying down looking at the stars.  I don’t have to miss a thing. Oh, and no pimples.

Lastly, Lastly (But Really the Most Important Part):

I don’t go anywhere without sunscreen and that includes camping.  You’re outside pretty much the whole time and unless it’s dark, that sun is shining on. So, don’t forget your sunscreen
